A dystopian wasteland stretches as far as the eye can see in the world of Apolo Cacho, whose comics, zines, and posters draw inspiration for their depraved setting from his home of Mexico City.
On his website, Cacho describes his work as “a compendium on the vicissitudes of human beings in one of the most polluted cities on Earth, viewed from a completely disenchanted perspective, although at times humorous and violent.” His bio says he lives in “la ciudad más horrible del mundo,” which you don’t need Google Translate to tell you means he doesn’t like it. He sublimates his disgust with one of the most populous urban areas in the world into the vivid fever dreams of his comics, which are as densely packed with lines as Mexico City is with people. He renders many-eyed, many-limbed creatures with so much texture that they seem to melt into his ornate, dirty urban backdrops.

Yet Cacho tolerates the city, perhaps for the ¡Joc-Doc! publishing house where he edits contemporary comic books and graphic novels. He’s also “producing an extensive collection of zines, posters, and graphic paraphernalia about Mexican identity, punk, social deviations, and the precarious reality in third-world countries.” Peep his work in the Instagrams below:
